Scottish Premiership runner-up Ross McCrorie will be playing League One football next season – for Pompey rather than Jack Ross’s Sunderland.

Sunderland’s frustrating transfer window goes on with the Daily Record reporting that Rangers ace Ross McCrorie has turned down a move to Wearside in favour of League One rivals Portsmouth.

The Black Cats are looking to build a squad capable of returning to the Championship at the second time of asking but that is proving to be easier said than done.

Sunderland have already missed out on James Wilson, Freddie Ladapo and Lawrence Shankland this summer and McCrorie has now also turned his nose up at a potential transfer to the Stadium of Light.

According to The Record, Sunderland made an eleventh hour attempt to sign the versatile defensive midfielder but he had already agreed to sign for Portsmouth instead on loan. Pompey will have an option to buy the Scotland U21 international on a permanent basis next year.

Perhaps the biggest surprise here, however, is that Rangers have allowed McCrorie to leave – possibly forever.

Back in 2017, former Gers coach Pedro Caixinha claimed that McCrorie was destined to become one of the best players in the history of Rangers and Scottish football, as reported by the Daily Record.

But Steven Gerrard clearly didn’t share Caixinha’s admiration for the academy graduate, despite handing him 31 appearances in all competitions last season.
