Gareth Ainsworth is a Loftus Road legend and could reportedly return to Queens Park Rangers if Tim Sherwood turns down the job.
Queens Park Rangers have made Tim Sherwood their number one managerial target but former Loftus Road favourite Gareth Ainsworth is also on their radar, according to the Standard.
The Championship strugglers brought an end to Steve McClaren’s erratic reign on Monday after a dismal 2-1 home defeat against a Bolton Wanderers side whose very future appears to be shrouded in doubt.
QPR are now scouring the market for a replacement with Sherwood, who was a front-runner to replace Harry Redknapp at the club back in 2015, reported to be at the top of their wish list.
The 50-year-old has been out of the game since he left Aston Villa four years ago but remains close friends with QPR’s director of football Les Ferdinand.
If Sherwood slips through their grasp again, the Standard suggests QPR could turn to Ainsworth.
The 45-year-old is a genuine QPR legend, having played over 150 games for the club between 2003 and 2010 before two spells in the dugout as the caretaker manager.
Ainsworth is currently one of the Football League’s longest serving managers, having been at the helm of Wycombe Wanderers since 2012. His side are currently 17th in the League One table but just two points above the relegation zone.
