Greg Docherty is expected to join a League One club on loan from Scottish Premiership outfit Rangers but will it be Sunderland?

Sunderland had looked set to win the race to sign Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty this summer.
The Scottish Sun stated in mid-July that manager Jack Ross had made the 21-year-old his top target after missing out on Hibernian’s John McGinn. It was also reported that Rangers were willing to let the 21-year-old leave on loan after he fell down the pecking order since Steven Gerrard’s arrival at Ibrox.
Since then, however, the links have grown cold with a number of other League One clubs, most recently Burton Albion, seemingly overtaking the Black Cats in the race.
Add to this the fact that Sunderland have also signed Luke O’Nien in the last week and it seemed unlikely that Docherty would be playing in red and white stripes next season.

But latest reports from the Shropshire Star suggest that Sunderland are still interested and appear to be Shrewsbury Town’s closest rivals for the former Hamilton Academical man.
Energetic and hard-working, Docherty was compared by some to former Ibrox hero Steven Davies but has failed to make an impression on Gerrard.
Rangers have brought in Lassana Coulibaly, Scott Arfield and Ovie Ejaria this summer, meaning the £675,000 Docherty would be better off leaving if he wants regular football.
