Championship table-toppers Leeds United are reportedly looking at two Swansea City attackers – Jefferson Montero and Dan James.
Daniel James has been heavily linked with a move to Leeds United in the last week or so but it is worth remembering that he is not the only Swansea City winger tipped to make the switch to Elland Road.
According to the Sun (13 January, page 59), Marcelo Bielsa would be interested in bringing Jefferson Montero to West Yorkshire if Leeds could arrange a short-term loan deal with Swansea.
The 29-year-old might not be an up-and-coming prospect like James, who could soak up Bielsa’s ingenious methods like a sponge, but his rapid pace and ability to make a difference off the bench would give Leeds an entirely different dimension in attack.
But the Sun has provided an update one week on (20 January, page 63).
They are now claiming the jet-heeled Ecuadorian international is indeed set to leave Swansea this month, but not necessarily for Leeds.
It is understood that he is closing in on a move to Mexican outfit Club America. Montero has already represented two clubs from that country in a nomadic career, playing for Dorados and Moreila.
But Leeds should be doing all they can to get in the way, particularly with a deal for James seemingly no nearer and Callum O’Dowda signing a contract extension with Bristol City last week.
Montero has shown this season that he can be a fearsome option off the bench, with his searing pace causing major headaches for opposition full-backs.
With Leeds’ patient, possession-based style failing to open up opponents of late, the South American would give Bielsa a very exciting plan B.
