Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka had reportedly emerged as a candidate to leave the Championship club to take over as Spain boss.

Nottingham Forest fans can sleep easy. Because it does not look like Aitor Karanka is going anywhere just yet.

Under the former Middlesbrough manager, optimism is sky high at the City Ground right now, with Forest acing the transfer window as they look to bring their 20-year Premier League exile to an overdue end.

The club have pulled off some excellent deals already, bringing back Michael Dawson and Costel Pantilimon, finding a prolific Championship goalscorer in Lewis Grabban, while smashing their transfer record to sign Joao Carvalho from Benfica for £13 million.

But their progress looked to have been checked when reports in Mundo Deportivo claimed that Karanka had emerged as a leading candidate to take over from Julen Lopetegui as the manager of the Spanish national team.

Karanka coached his country at U16 level between 2008 and 2010 and was understood to be a favourite of RFEF chief Luis Rubiales.

But Forest’s fears are now over.

As reported by the BBC, the former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique has ended his one-year sabbatical by taking over La Roja, which means that Karanka will surely now stay at the City Ground to plot Forest’s promotion bid.
