Preston North End are in the Championship’s relegation zone, with David Moyes and Danny Cowley linked with the job at Deepdale.

Alex Neil manager of Preston looks on during the pre season friendly match between Preston North End and Burnley at Deepdale on July 25, 2017 in Preston, England.

Alex Neil certainly needed that.

Preston North End finally ended a win-less run that had endured since the opening day of the season as they battered Wigan Athletic 4-0 at Deepdale on Saturday, easing some of the mounting pressure on the former Norwich City and Hamilton boss.

But the Lilywhites are still stuck in the Championship’s relegation zone in 22nd place, having picked up just nine points from 12 games.

According to TEAMtalk, Preston have drawn up a shortlist of potential replacements for 37-year-old Neil, and one name in particular should generate plenty of intrigue.

TEAMtalk claim that David Moyes is on the radar of chairman Peter Ridsdale, with a shock return to the Lancashire club not beyond the realms of possibility.

55-year-old Moyes ended his playing career and started his managerial journey at Preston, coaching the side between 1998 and 2002 before getting his big break at Everton. The former Manchester United and Sunderland boss is currently out of work after leaving West Ham United at the end of last season.

The report adds that Preston are also big fans of the managerial duo Danny and Nicky Cowley, who have lead Lincoln City from non-league to the top of the fourth tier. The Cowley brothers became the talk of the nation when the Imps reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in 2017, beating Ipswich, Brighton and Burnley along the way.
