The dynamic midfielder could follow the likes of Conor Hourihane and James Bree out of Barnsley this month.
Barnsley are paying a heavy price for success. However, The Sun’s forecast suggests that their winter of discontent is set to continue. Josh Scowen has reportedly turned down an offer of a new contract, meaning he will be free to leave Oakwell in the summer or on a cut-price deal in the final days of the transfer window.
The hard-working 23-year-old has been a regular fixture in Paul Heckingbottom’s midfield this season although, with the Barnsley squad decimated by player sales, their ability to build on an impressive start to the season, and thus keep their key players, looks to have been irreparably damaged.
Already this month, influential captain Conor Hourihane (below) and promising full-back James Bree departed for Aston Villa, top scorer Sam Winnall jumped ship to Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday and others may leave before Tuesday’s deadline.
Therefore, Heckingbottom can hardly afford to lose Scowen, a valuable and consistent member of his starting XI.
Although, with his contract entering its final six months, there is not a lot he can do to prevent the inevitable.
