Barrie McKay looked set to leave Nottingham Forest for a move to Greek giants Olympiakos this summer after falling down the pecking order at the City Ground.

But in reports provided by the Daily Record, McKay’s future was still very much up in the air with teams from Germany, Russia and, intriguingly, England interested in the former Rangers winger.

Until now, however, it had been a mystery which clubs in the UK were keen on handing McKay and escape route. But the Scottish Sun has now put a name in the frame – Nottingham Forest’s Championship rivals Reading.

The Royals are clearly in need of adding some more pace and creativity to their attack having been forced to wait until the final day of the 2017/18 season to secure to Championship survival, one year after reaching the play-off final at Wembley.

Reading scored just 48 goals in the league, less than bottom of the table Sunderland and level with relegated Barnsley.

McKay, meanwhile, has plenty of speed and vision in his locker, even if his work rate sometimes leaves something to be desired. He scored twice and set up four goals in his first seven Championship games for Forest under Mark Warburton before finding himself out of favour under Aitor Karanka.

Forest paid just £500,000 to sign McKay from Rangers last summer.
