Premier League giants Spurs appear to have turned their sights to Cagliari’s young midfielder Nico Barella.

Tottenham are hedging their bets in pursuit of a new midfielder in the January transfer window with a whole host of players tipped to succeed Mousa Dembele in North London.

Nico Barella has been one of those most heavily linked in recent weeks with Calciomercato claiming that Mauricio Pochettino’s side were ready to step up their interest in the dynamic Cagliari starlet.

And it seems that Tottenham have used the international break to take a closer look at a player who has suddenly emerged in recent months as one of the most coveted players anywhere in Italian football.

It is claimed by Tuttomercatoweb that Spurs sent scouts to watch Barella during Italy’s 1-0 friendly win against the USA on Tuesday. Inter Milan’s Matteo Politano hogged the headlines by scoring the winner in second-half stoppage time but Barella was impressive in the centre of the park, lasting 76 minutes before being subbed off.

TMW add that Tottenham’s scouts were enthused by the youngster’s display.

But with Cagliari demanding around £45 million for their greatest asset, it remains to be seen if chairman Daniel Levy is willing to break the club’s transfer record with a new stadium to pay for.
