Newcastle United are interested in signing Sevilla’s Ibrahim Amadou, according to claims made by Estadio Deportivo.
With just a week remaining in the transfer window, Newcastle are making a rather belated attempt to reinforce Steve Bruce’s squad.
Joelinton has arrived for a club-record £36 million and, after Jake Turner and Kyle Scott was snapped up for free, Nice winger Allan Saint-Maximin is now apparently on his way to St James’ Park, as reported by the Chronicle.
And if reports from Spain are to be believed, the Magpies are looking to strengthen their defence too.
Cameroon-born Amadou, who played for France at youth level, joined Sevilla from Lille a year ago for £13 million. But he started just seven times in a disappointing La Liga season, leading to speculation that he could be on his way out of the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan after just 12 months.
Estadio Deportivo claim that Newcastle and Getafe are both interested in Amadou, who is comfortable in defence and in the heart of midfield.
The 26-year-old isn’t only versatile, he is a leader too. Amadou was immediately given the captain’s armband by the legendary Marcelo Bielsa when he took over at Lille in the summer of 2017.
So you can see why Bruce would be keen, despite Amadou’s struggles in Andalusia. The former Sunderland boss looks set to introduce a new 3-5-2 system at St James’ Park and Amadou could be the linchpin at the heart of their back line, flitting effortlessly between defence and midfield.
