Luke Matheson scored a famous goal against Manchester United in the EFL Cup but will he soon be playing Premier League football with Newcastle?

Newcastle United are interested in signing Rochdale wonder-kid Luke Matheson, according to the Chronicle – and, what’s more, they have been keeping tabs on the teenager long before his goal against Manchester United this week.

Most players can only dream of scoring at Old Trafford. Matheson has done that already at the age of just 16.

In his twelfth appearance in senior football, Matheson picked up the ball and fired it past Sergio Romero as Rochdale took Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s giants to penalties in the EFL Cup third round. United triumphed on spot-kicks but, after the game, everyone was talking about a fresh-faced wide man who was supposed to be preparing for a psychology exam on Thursday.

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle have been aware of the young right-back for some time, having been alerted to his potential when he made his mark in the Checkatrade Trophy over a year ago.

Matheson earned the Man of the Match award when making his senior debut at the age of just 15 last year and, according to the Mail, Liverpool and Manchester United wanted him back then.

And after his star showing at Old Trafford, don’t be surprised if Newcastle face competition from the giants of the North West for his increasingly sought-after signature.
