Former Middlesbrough captain Ben Gibson could reportedly make a controversial move to Newcastle United.

Ben Gibson may be a Middlesbrough hero but, according to TEAMtalk, there is a chance that the former Riverside captain could be on his way back to the North East with none other than Newcastle United.

The 26-year-old centre-back is the very definition of a local hero. Gibson was born in Nunthorpe, a suburb of Middlesbrough, before rising through the ranks at his boyhood club, forcing his way into the starting XI and eventually taking over the captain’s armband.

The tough-tackling centre-half led his team out on a weekly basis in the 2016/17 Premier League season and even earned a call-up for the England national team.

In fact, only the chance to return to the top flight in a £15 million move to Burnley was enough to convince Gibson to walk away from the club he loves.

However, according to TEAMtalk, his loyalty will be put under severe pressure with Newcastle keen to bring Gibson to St James’ Park.

The 6ft 1ins powerhouse played just one Premier League game for Burnley during a forgettable, injury-hit season at Turf Moor, a 5-1 defeat to Everton on Boxing Day, and the report states that The Clarets are open to selling their record signing.

Newcastle want to bring Gibson to Tyneside on loan with a view to a permanent deal.

But will his Middlesbrough connections make him think twice about pulling on that famous black and white shirt?
