Fulham’s star man is valued at a huge price but Newcastle United are desperate for a creative midfielder.

Newcastle United are still interested in making a move for Fulham play-maker Tom Cairney, the Chronicle claims, despite reports suggesting he will not be leaving Craven Cottage for less than £20 million.

The Magpies continue to endure frustration in the transfer window with reported target Ruben Loftus-Cheek remaining at Chelsea under the demands of coach Antonio Conte and Tom Cleverley leaving Everton for Watford in the face of apparent interest from Tyneside.

Consequently, speculation has intensified that Rafa Benitez’s side will instead scour their own league for players who can add a dash of creativity to a midfield that has looked increasingly vulnerable in recent weeks and Fulham’s Cairney, one of the best in his position outside of the top flight, is allegedly taking pride of place on Newcastle’s wishlist.

And the Chronicle reports that the Magpies remain interested in the 25-year-old despite being quoted a huge £20 million fee for his services following their initial enquiry.

Cairney has been in outstanding form this season, guiding Fulham to the verge of the play-offs thanks to five goals from midfield.

However, the prospect of paying a club record price for a player whose last Premier League appearance came all the way back in 2010 could prove a huge test of owner Mike Ashley’s ambitions.

Supporters have frequently lambasted the Sports Direct don for failing to invest adequately but it will be interesting to see whether Newcastle’s relegation has given Ashley a ‘kick up the backside’ so to speak.

After all, £20 million would look a rather astute investment if Cairney helps spearhead an immediate return to the top flight.
