Swansea City look set to lose Jordan Ayew after they were relegated from the Premier League, but could Newcastle win the race ahead of Fulham?

It’s been another quiet transfer window so far for Newcastle United and things looked set to get even more frustrating when The Chronicle reported last week that Rafa Benitez was told he would have to sift through the bargain basement again – despite owner Mike Ashley publically claiming that funds would be made available.
But there appears to be some good news at last.

Ayew, a Ghana international, was one of The Swans’ few bright sparks as their seven-year stay in the Premier League came to an end last season. The 26-year-old scored 11 goals in all competitions and impressed with his direct running and pace in attack.
Sky Sports had reported last week that newly promoted Fulham had made a bid of £8 million for Ayew but it seems that Newcastle have also joined the chase having expressed an interest in signing the versatile forward.

The Magpies certainly need more firepower and although Ayew is far from prolific, he would give Benitez more strength in depth and options in attack. Ayew can play through the middle, off the striker, or in a wider role.
It must be pointed out, however, that Ayew has been relegated in his last two full Premier League seasons with Aston Villa and Swansea. Newcastle fans will be hoping this is not a bad omen.
