When you’re looking for a solid new defender to reinforce your backline, it’s not often a player who has spent the entire season mired to the bottom of the table jumps off the page.

Yet, according to Sky Germany, Darmstadt’s inevitable relegation from the Bundesliga is unlikely to prevent Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town from making a move for centre-back Luca Caldirola.

On loan from Werder Bremen, Caldirola is largely blameless for Darmstadt’s horrific season however. Thanks to a serious ankle injury, the 26-year-old has only made five starts in the German top flight this season.

Though after a frustrating campaign, he could be set for an exciting summer with Championship high-flyers Newcastle and Huddersfield town reportedly keen.

Able to play at centre-half or left-back, the former Italy Under-21 captain’s versatility is likely to appeal to Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez – particularly with Achraf Lazaar’s expected departure likely to leave Paul Dummett as the club’s only orthodox option on the left of defence (The Chronicle).

Furthermore, with The Magpies’ promotion back to the Premier League confirmed, St James’ Park could be a tempting destination.

Although Huddersfield could join them in the top flight if they negotiate the play-offs. Furthermore, former Dortmund youth coach David Wagner has utilised his connections to great affect this season, bringing in six players from Germany since the start of last summer.

Therefore, Caldirola, who has also been linked with Stoke City, would be joining a Germanic-heavy dressing room.
