Newcastle United need a new left-back and have discussed the possibility of signing Pape Souare from Premier League rivals Crystal Palace.

Rafa Benitez had hoped to bring in up to four new faces at Newcastle United by 20 January, as reported by The Chronicle.

But as long as Mike Ashley remains at the helm, it appears that Benitez will be denied the chance to invest substantial funds in fresh talent to keep the relegation wolf from the door.

Short-term loans are the order of the day at Newcastle this month, with Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk podcast already pointing out that the club has made failed attempts for Chelsea defender David Luiz and Liverpool duo Daniel Sturridge and Danny Ings.

It is understood that wages were a problem.

But Newcastle will be hoping that a deal to sign Pape Souare from Crystal Palace will prove a little more straightforward. According to talkSPORT (broadacast on 9th January), the Magpies have held talks with the Eagles about signing the left-back on loan for the rest of the season.

It is no secret that Newcastle are in the market for a left-back due to the lack of support for Paul Dummett, whose hamstring injury at the start of the season left Benitez without a specialist in the position.

And Palace may be open to letting Souare go with both Patrick Van Aanholt and Jeffrey Schlupp ahead of him in the pecking order.

The former Lille defender, who only recently recovered from a serious car crash that left him on the sidelines for over a year, made his first start of the season in Monday’s 2-1 FA Cup defeat to bitter rivals Brighton.
