Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has been very open about his desire to bring in a striker this summer.

Although the first centre-forward who will walk through the St James’ Park entrance is not a proven, £20 million goal machine but an unknown teenager, albeit a very promising one.

It was reported recently that Newcastle were interested in signing 17-year-old Yannick Toure and it seems that a deal is now closer than ever to being announced.

The Senegal-born youngster spent time on trial at Newcastle last season, and he impressed head of recruitment Steve Nickson after netting a remarkable 23 goals in 23 games in the Swiss U18 Elite League in 2017/18 for Young Boys.

Since being linked with a move a few weeks ago, Toure is now a free agent. His contract at the Bern-based club has now expired, meaning he is free to seal a move to Tyneside, the Chronicle claims.

The report adds that Newcastle would have to pay a compensation figure to land the Switzerland U18 international, but Toure’s prolific goal-scoring record at youth level means he is certainly worth the risk.

The teenager will start life at Newcastle with the U23s and will be hoping to make an impression, particularly considering that young players have struggled to force their way into Newcastle’s first-team plans in recent seasons.
