It seems Newcastle United have won the race for the player according to fresh reports.

Newcastle fans hold up a banner during the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Leicester City at St. James Park on December 9, 2017 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

It has been another frustrating summer for Newcastle United fans with only one new signing arriving for a fee – goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. Ki Sung-Yeung moved to Tyneside after the expiry of his Swansea contract while Kenedy has returned on another loan deal from Chelsea.

But now that the Magpies have finally managed to get rid of Chancel Mbemba and Matz Sels, manager Rafa Benitez has some money to play with. And the Spaniard is not waiting around in his attempts to reinforce a rather limited squad.

The Mail states that Swiss defender Fabian Schar is due for a medical at Newcastle on Wednesday. He will arrive for £3.5 million from relegated La Liga outfit Deportivo La Coruna.

And the Toon are looking to strengthen at the other end, too, with a deal for Mainz striker Yoshinori Muto understood to be progressing nicely.

The Mail adds that Newcastle are in advanced talks to sign the Japanese international and hope to agree a fee of £9 million with the Bundesliga club for his signature.

The former FC Tokyo forward Muto is a quick and instinctive striker who has a respectable tally of 20 goals in 66 league games for Mainz. And it seems that Newcastle have beaten Premier League rivals West Ham to his signature.

Bild stated last week that West Ham had joined Newcastle in the race for his signature but it seems that Benitez’s side are now out in front.
