Nahitan Nandez of Boca Juniors impressed for Uruguay at the World Cup but could he be on his way to the Premier League with Newcastle United?
Nahitan Nandez might not have been one of Uruguay’s headline acts as they reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup but he certainly made an impact.
Situated on the right of Oscar Tabarez’s midfield, Nandez started four of his country’s five matches in Russia with his work-rate, relentless harrying of opponents and quality in possession making him a key player.
And it seems those displays caught the eye of one Premier League team – Newcastle United.
According to South American radio station Continental (broadcast on ClossAm, 26 July at 6:00pm), Newcastle have made an enquiry about the availability of the 22-year-old midfielder, who plays for Argentine outfit Boca Juniors.
It is reported that Newcastle asked about the release clause in Nandez’s contract, which is understood to be somewhere in the region of £12 million.
The energetic enforcer moved to Boca in 2017 from Uruguayan outfit Penarol and scored four goals in 27 games in his debut season.
Newcastle have money to play with now and look set to add Mainz striker Yoshinori Muto to Fabian Schar, but it remains to be seen whether they could afford to pay the £12 million required to bring Nandez to St James’ Park.
