Could Newcastle United target Steven Gerrard replace Rafael Benitez in the Premier League after just one season in the Scottish Premiership with Rangers?

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard looks on during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Stadium on May 12, 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Newcastle United’s pursuit of a new manager has taken another twist on Thursday morning with the Northern Echo claiming that they are confident about convincing Steven Gerrard to walk away from Rangers.

The Magpies are facing up to the almost impossible task of replacing Rafael Benitez, a hugely successful coach who has won titles with Liverpool, Chelsea and Valencia, with the Spaniard’s departure confirmed earlier in the week – to the fury of most Newcastle fans.

And it seems that Newcastle are looking to go down a new route altogether with club apparently looking at young, up and coming coaches rather than established big names.

Mikel Arteta, Eddie Howe and Patrick Vieira are all under ‘serious consideration’ – and so too is Gerrard.

The 39-year-old former Liverpool captain enjoyed a promising first year in management with Rangers, closing the gap to Celtic at the top of the table and also winning two Old Firm derbies during 2018/19.

Now, Gerrard appeared to rule out a move to Newcastle when he claimed earlier in the week that he was loving life at Ibrox and was focusing purely on the new season.

But the Northern Echo claims that there is genuine confidence that Gerrard could be tempted by a return to the Premier League.

This would be a massive blow for Rangers too, given that the 2005 Champions League winner has kick-started an ambitious and exciting project which is designed to end with the Gers back at the top of Scottish football.
