League One Sunderland have lost the talented Spencer, not to Manchester City but to local rivals and Championship hopefuls Boro.

Morten Spencer is set to sign for Middlesbrough after terminating his contract with Sunderland, as reported by TV2.

The talented left winger has emerged as one of the most talked-about youngsters in English football over the last few months and Sunderland appeared to have high hopes for him.

But after seeing exciting talents like Josh Maja and Joel Asoro leave the Stadium of Light since last summer, it seems that Spencer will never make an appearance for the first-team on Wearside.

TV2 claims that the teenager has terminated his contract with the League One side and is now set to make the short trip to Middlesbrough, Sunderland’s bitter north east neighbours.

This will come as a disappointment to Manchester City, who the Sun claimed were set to sign Spencer in a £200,000 deal.

“Manchester City is one of the clubs that has shown interest,” Spencer’s mother, Heide Lunde, told TV2.

“But that would mean that he had to move away from home to live and play there. Eventually, we have felt that City is such a large club with quite a few talents that are eventually sent out on loan. Therefore, we have looked at other alternatives.”

Clearly, the Spencer family feel that he is better off staying in the north east and honing his trade at the Riverside rather than moving to the Etihad Stadium.

Considering that City have failed to find a place for Jadon Sancho and Brahim Diaz in Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad, maybe this is the right idea.
