Newcastle United look set to bring MLS star Miguel Almiron to the Premier League from Atlanta United.
If Mike Ashley is willing to pay up, Newcastle United could have one of their biggest signings in years.
According to The Sun, manager Rafa Benitez and head of recruitment Steven Nickson have been working their fingers to the bone on a big-money deal for the dazzling Atlanta United playmaker Miguel Almiron.
The report adds that Everton, West Ham and Arsenal have also expressed an interest in the Paraguayan international but Newcastle are in pole position with Benitez and Nickson confident that a deal can be done.
And it seems that while, Almiron might not end Michael Owen’s 13-year reign as Newcastle’s record signing, he will still cost a hefty fee. It is understood that Newcastle want the 25-year-old on an initial loan deal with the option to sign him permanently at the end of the season for around £15million.
Cronica in Paraguay adds that Almiron has chosen Newcastle because he believes he’ll get regular first-team football on Tyneside. So, as long as Ashley is willing to invest, it seems that the South American star could be the creative number 10 that Benitez has been crying out for.
Almiron scored 13 goals and set up 11 more in the MLS for Atlanta in the 2018 campaign and finished behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney in the Player of the Year awards.
Atlanta will go head-to-head with Portland Timbers in the final of the MLS Cup at the weekend too so Almiron could leave on a high.
