Aberdeen need to hang on to Scotland centre-back McKenna in the face of Championship interest from Boro and Stoke.

Middlesbrough have joined Stoke City in the race to sign highly-rated Aberdeen centre-back Scott McKenna before today’s transfer deadline, according to the Scottish Sun.

Despite securing the signature of Danny Batth from Wolverhampton Wanderers this week, the Potters appear to be attempting to sign another commanding centre-back with McKenna top of their list.

The Mail reported on Wednesday that Stoke had made a £5 million bid for the 22-year-old, who is regarded as one of the biggest talents in Scottish football.

But Nathan Jones is expected to face competition from Championship rivals Middlesbrough. Tony Pulis too needs a new centre-back after, rather ironically, losing Batth to Stoke. Batth spend the first half of the season on loan at the Riverside before Wolves re-called him.

The Sun reports that Boro have made a bid for McKenna which has been rejected by Aberdeen, who want to net closer to £10 million for their prize asset.

The 6ft 2ins centre-half is one of the first names on Derek McInnes’s team sheet and even captained Scotland on just his fourth international appearance against Mexico in June.
