Jacob Murphy is reportedly set for Sheffield Wednesday but Championship rivals Boro are interested in a player who has struggled in the Premier League.
Middlesbrough had shown an interest in signing Newcastle United’s forgotten man Jacob Murphy, according to the Sun (live blog, 8.15am) but the winger has agreed a move to Sheffield Wednesday instead.
If the Championship’s opening fixture is anything to go by, this new-look Boro side are going to be far more exciting than the pragmatic, goal-shy side who missed out on a place in the play-offs under Tony Pulis last season.
New manager Jonathan Woodgate is keen to get the best out of attacking talent such as Britt Assombalonga, Lewis Wing and Marcus Tavernier.
And Boro’s interest in the jet-heeled wideman Murphy rather sums up their change to a more forward-thinking approach.
According to The Sun, Middlesbrough wanted to sign the £12 million flop from local rivals Newcastle on loan. Instead, however, Murphy is set to play for Sheffield Wednesday this season, having agreed terms with The Owls.
And this is undoubtedly a blow to Boro’s promotion plans. Murphy produced nine goals and six assists in his most recent Championship campaign for Norwich City and just imagine the havoc he could wreak if given the freedom to strut his stuff by Woodgate.
There is still time left but Middlesbrough, having also missed out on Lucas Boye to Reading, need speed and quality on the wings and fast.
