Tottenham Hotspur reportedly offered £45m for Ajax’s De Jong in the summer but Premier League rivals Manchester United allegedly want him, too.
Tottenham Hotspur failed to sign a single player during the summer transfer window, but it seems they are prepared to break their own transfer record in 2019.
According to the Mail, Spurs saw a mammoth £45 million bid for Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong knocked back in the summer.
But the North London side are understood to have retained an interest, with Mundo Deportivo claiming Tottenham could even make another bid in January, with manager Mauricio Pochettino a huge fan of the 21-year-old.
Barcelona’s interest has been well documented. But it seems Spurs are now facing competition from Manchester United, too.
According to the Mail, Jose Mourinho’s side sent scouts to watch De Jong in action during Holland’s recent 2-1 UEFA Nations League defeat to France, with United keen to bolster their squad in January.
And the Old Trafford giants are confident that their relationship with Ajax’s chief executive officer, who happens to be their 2008 Champions League winning goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar, will help them secure a deal for De Jong.
Ajax are understood to be demanding £50 million; a fee that is not beyond Manchester United’s budget. But it remains to be seen whether Tottenham are prepared to raise their bid at a time when so much of their funds are being devoted to the new stadium.
