Taiwo Awoniyi still hasn’t played a Premier League game for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool but can he thrive in France under Patrick Vieira?
Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi is set to spend the next stage of his development in France, with CompleteSports claiming that he is set for a loan move to Nice.
With so much talk about the futures of Harry Wilson and Ryan Kent this summer, another Liverpool youngster has gone under the radar somewhat.
There has been plenty of interest in 21-year-old Awoniyi, however, and with good reason. The young Nigerian spent last season on loan at Mouscron in Belgium and he scored 14 times in all competitions.
And reports from his native Nigeria suggest that Awoniyi will now be given the chance to prove his worth in a far better league.
Patrick Vieira’s Nice finished seventh in Ligue 1 last season and that was a minor miracle, given that they scored just 30 times in 38 matches. Nice failed to replace Alassane Plea or Mario Balotelli, meaning Awoniyi will be under plenty of pressure to add some much-needed quality in the final third.
The Liverpool Echo reported in May that Jurgen Klopp’s side would have considered selling Awoniyi for £10 million but it seems that he’s heading for another temporary move away from Anfield instead.
And, who knows, perhaps Awoniyi will thrive in France and return 12 months later ready to force his way into Klopp’s first-team plans. Natural centre-forwards are in relatively short supply at Anfield after all.
