Domagoj Vida was fantastic as Croatia beat England in the World Cup semi-finals; no wonder Premier League giants Liverpool reportedly want to sign him.
Domagoj Vida has been an absolute revelation at the World Cup.
The 29-year-old Besiktas defender was not even guaranteed to start for Croatia before the tournament, but he has ousted the veteran Vedran Corluka and never looked back. After scoring in extra-time and the penalty shootout during the nervy last-eight win against Russia, Vida was immense once more as Croatia killed off England’s hopes in the semi-final.
The publication claimed prior to the clash with the Three Lions on Wednesday that Liverpool had put a bid of £15.9 million on the table. And it is understood that they have now raised their offer to around £17.5 million as interest in arguably the best centre-half in Russia intensifies.
The problem, however, is that Besiktas want £31 million for Vida – a fee which is even more remarkable when you consider that the 2017 Super Lig champions signed him for free from Dinamo Kiev as recently as January.
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool would be willing to add another £10 million-plus on to their offer. Ironically, Vida could be targeted as a potential upgrade on his Croatian centre-back partner Dejan Lovren.
