Everton looked to have Charlton Athletic defender Ezri Konsa wrapped up but Premier League and Merseyside rivals Liverpool have other ideas.

Ezri Konsa looked almost certain to be heading to Merseyside this month, but it was expected that he would be wearing blue rather than red.
The Toffees had been watching Konsa closely since at least the end of last season and, after missing out in the summer, looked set to finally get their man with Addicks owner Roland Duchatelet willing to cash in on the club’s prize asset.

But it appears that Everton should have got the deal wrapped up when they had the chance.
Because Kent Live is now reporting that Merseyside rivals Liverpool have dramatically entered the race for one of the Football League’s brightest prospects. The report even states that the Reds are now leading the chase to sign Konsa this month.
Liverpool already have one former Charlton prospect on their books, having raided the League One club to sign Joe Gomez in the summer of 2015.
Gomez has since developed into a regular starter at Anfield and even made his England debut in the Autumn, winning the Man of the Match award against Brazil no less.

So Konsa could be forgiven for wanting to follow in Gomez’s footsteps.
But with Everton having put all their efforts into signing Konsa for six months at least, it would be a real blow to lose out to Liverpool at the eleventh hour.
