Manchester United aren’t the only Premier League giant keeping a close eye on Serie A star Jorginho, with Liverpool sniffing around too.
Jorginho has been absolutely instrumental in Napoli’s pursuit of a first Serie A title since 1990.
He is the glue that holds Maurizio Sarri’s thrilling side together from the base of midfield, controlling games in a manner that Andrea Pirlo did for Juventus or akin to Xavi in his Barcelona pomp.
So imagine the surprise, then, if Napoli let the Brazil-born Italy international leave. Though according to Jorginho’s agent Joao Santos, that is exactly what could happen.
“He wants to stay, although we’ll have to see if Napoli agree with that,” Santos said of the deep-lying playmaker, who has a contract at the Stadio San Paolo until 2020, per The Mail.
“If a player like (Lucas) Torreira arrives from Sampdoria, then that will require an important investment and Jorginho could be sacrificed to make way.”
This, however, could be music to the ears of Liverpool, because The Times are reporting that Jorginho is one of the players right at the top of Jurgen Klopp’s shopping list for the summer transfer window.
It is understood that Liverpool are eyeing a new number one and replacements for both Philippe Coutinho and the seemingly-departing Emre Can (below).
And Jorginho, who is arguably the most complete deep-lying midfielder in world football right now, would certainly represent a major coup for a Liverpool side who could be challenging for the Premier League title next season.
A deal is easier said than done, however, with The Mail reporting that bitter rivals Manchester United have also identified Jorginho as a long-term successor for Michael Carrick.
