Liverpool are reportedly set to lure Sepp Van den Berg to the Premier League from Eredivisie outfit PEC Zwolle.

Liverpool are set to complete the signing of PEC Zwolle defender Sepp Van den Berg and, according to Goal, the Premier League runners-up see plenty of similarities between the young defender and a certain Joe Gomez.

Four years ago, an 18-year-old Gomez arrived at Anfield from Charlton Athletic for £3.5 million (BBC), becoming one of Brendan Rodgers’ finally signings on Merseyside.

And, despite enduring a series of long-term injury problems, Gomez has gone from strength to strength, establishing himself as a senior England international and one of the Premier League’s most promising centre-halves.

As reported by Goal, Liverpool’s chief scout Barry Hunter was instrumental in the deal to bring Gomez to Liverpool and, four years on, he is looking to snap up another dazzling defensive talent in Van den Berg – a Dutch 17-year-old who is also a target for Bayern Munich, Ajax and PSV.

Liverpool’s recruitment team apparently believe that Van den Berg shares a lot of similarities with a 2015 Gomez as they look to pull off another impressive deal for one of the continent’s best ball-playing defensive talents.

Now, Liverpool don’t tend to get too much wrong these days in the transfer market with sporting director Michael Edwards leading a data-driven approach to scouting and recruitment which continues to be hugely successful.

So if Van den Berg does arrive, don’t bet against him following in Gomez’s footsteps and becoming a first-team regular before long.
