Liverpool flop Lazar Markovic has held talks with a Mexican club as his miserable spell at Anfield nears its merciful conclusion, as reported by Goal.
A £20 million signing from Benfica in 2014 (BBC), the Serbian winger has not made a single first-team appearance since Jurgen Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers in the dugout four years ago and has spent time out on loan at Galatasaray, Sporting Lisbon, Hull City and Anderlecht.
Markovic’s contract expires at the end of the season but the Mail claimed last week that Liverpool were hoping to sell him in January to at least recoup some of their investment.
The report added that the 24-year-old, who is earning £50,000 a week on Merseyside, had been the subject of some tentative interest from the Chinese Super League.
But Goal believes a shock move to Mexico could be on the cards. Liverpool are understood to have held talks with one Liga MX outfit, although the identity of the alleged suitors remains a mystery at this stage.
Whatever happens, Markovic will surely go down as one of the most disappointing signings in Liverpool’s recent history.
