Houssem Aouar has been fantastic since breaking through at Lyon, so much so that Premier League and La Liga giants Liverpool and Barcelona are keen.

When a 19-year-old play-maker with just 17 league starts under his belt is being targeted by Barcelona, you can assume that he is rather special.

And Lyon’s fresh-faced genius Houssem Aouar is exactly that. The French teenager only made his Ligue 1 debut off the bench last April, but he has quickly established himself as a key player for Bruno Genesio’s side with four goals and two assists in the French top flight.

Aouar has been so dazzling for Lyon in the last few months, however, that the Mirror is stating that Liverpool will go head-to-head with Barcelona to sign a velvet-footed midfielder of Algerian descent who, for obvious reasons, has been compared to none other than Zinedine Zidane.

Goal reports that Liverpool tried to sign Aouar before he signed his first professional contract with Lyon and, despite less than one full season in the first-team, he could now command a huge transfer fee.

Outspoken president Jean-Michel Aulas, in quotes reported by ESPN, stated in January that Lyon would only sell Aouar, and fellow academy graduate Nabil Fekir, ‘very expensively’.

Liverpool have plenty of cash in their pocket following Philippe Coutinho’s sale to Barcelona for £145 million in the January transfer window. And there are few young talents in world football who have the potential to fill the void left by the Reds’ departed number 10, but Aouar is definitely one of them.
