Tottenham Hotspur have been relentlessly, if ambitiously, linked with an emotional swoop for former Spurs star Gareth Bale amid questions about his long-term future at Real Madrid.

But perhaps Bale is not the Madrid star who will be making a shock return to North London come the end of the season.

According to Spanish paper Diario Gol, Luka Modric is worried that he is past his best at the age of 32, and there are doubts in his mind that he will be able to maintain his customary consistency throughout an entire campaign at Madrid in the coming years.

Yes, the Croatian play-maker produced a simply mesmerising outside-of-the-boot assist in Saturday’s 2-1 win at Eibar but he, like so many of his Madrid teammates, has dropped a level at times during a disappointing campaign.

And Diario Gol believes that the two-time Champions League winner has his heart set on a return to the Premier League.

It is understood that Liverpool would welcome him to Anfield with open arms, with Modric perhaps seen as a successor to Philippe Coutinho. Real’s number ten certainly has the vision, the creativity and the sublime weight of pass to compensate for the Brazilian’s move to Barcelona.

But Diario Gol believe that Modric’s preference would be to return to London. And Spurs would be more than happy to welcome back their prodigal son.

Tottenham fans should not get ahead of themselves just yet though. Modric signed a contract until 2020 last October.
