Premier League Liverpool have never managed to directly replace Philippe Coutinho at Anfield – but could Lyon’s Ligue 1 star be that man?
Lyon have got used to seeing their star players leave in recent seasons, and 2019 is shaping up to be another turbulent year for the Ligue 1 giants in the transfer market.
Nabil Fekir, Tanguy Ndombele and Ferland Mendy all appear to have an uncertain future at the Stade OL – and it seems that interest in the dazzling young midfielder Houssem Aouar is increasing too.
The waifish 20-year-old exploded onto the scene a year ago with his quick feet and masterful passing range. His form in the early weeks of 2018/19 has been hugely impressive. Aouar has scored five times in just 11 Ligue 1 starts for Lyon, meaning he is already just one away from matching last season’s tally.
And, according to RMC Sport, Aouar has now caught the eye of Liverpool side, whose midfield could do with a player of the Frenchman’s mercurial creative talents.
On paper, Aouar could be the long-term successor to Philippe Coutinho at Liverpool given that he plays in the same left-sided midfield role as the Brazilian playmaker, who left Anfield for Barcelona in January. But with Lyon having tied Aouar down to a new five-year contract in July, the French side are holding all the cards.
