Report: Liverpool bid £12m to beat Everton to Domagoj Vida

Croatia’s World Cup star Domagoj Vida has been linked with a move away from Besiktas with Premier League duo Everton and Liverpool reportedly bidding

Everton are not the only club on Merseyside in need of a new centre-back.

Liverpool are still lacking a top quality partner for the world’s most expensive defender, Virgil van Dijk, with Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan ranging from unconvincing to just plain erratic.

But Domagoj Vida’s fine performances at the World Cup for Croatia appear to have made him a wanted man in England’s north west.

It was reported by Sabah on Thursday that Everton had made an £11.5 million offer for the 29-year-old Besiktas centre-back, who has helped Croatia reach the quarter finals of the World Cup in Russia while emerging as one of the tournament’s real surprise stars.

But Turkish TV channel A Spor is claiming that Liverpool have also made a bid. It is understood that Everton’s bitter local rivals have offered around £12 million for Lovren’s international centre-back partner.

The report, however, adds that Besiktas would give the green light for Vida to leave but they want about £18 million for a player they landed on a free from Dinamo Kiev as recently as Christmas. Vida has another four years left on his contract in Istanbul.

Clearly, his reputation and price-tag has risen considerably in Russia but Liverpool should perhaps be wary of the curse of a ‘World Cup signing’. Remember Milan Jovanovic?
