Championship duo Leeds United and Wigan Athletic are reportedly keen on signing Matthew Pennington from Premier League outfit Everton.
Matthew Pennington did not exactly set the world alight during his loan spell at Leeds United last season.
The 23-year-old moved to Elland Road from Everton amid high expectations. Pennington has been tipped for big things at Goodison Park and impressed when given the chance in the latter stages of the 2016/17 campaign, even scoring in a Merseyside derby against Liverpool.
But Pennington managed just 15 Championship starts during his spell at Leeds with injuries impeding his progress.
Nonetheless, reports from the Liverpool Echo are claiming that this has not put Leeds off from attempting to bring Pennington back for a second spell at Elland Road.
Newly promoted Wigan Athletic have made an enquiry according to the report, but it is added that Leeds are still interested in handing the cultured youngster another chance to prove himself in West Yorkshire.
Given that Pennington signed a new three-year deal in May and has been involved in Marco Silva’s first-team throughout pre-season, it is likely that any return to Elland Road would only be via a loan deal.
It is interesting to note that Leeds’ apparent interest in Pennington has re-surfaced a week before the new Championship season kicks off. With no deals for other centre-halves in the pipeline, is this potentially a sign that time is running out?
