Portuguese Under-23 star Tobias Figueiredo could be the latest new nationality in Leeds United’s squad.
It doesn’t seem as if director of football Victor Orta has paid much attention to the demands of Leeds United supporters, who wanted proven Championship talent in January with many of the cheap imports arriving at Elland Road over the summer failing to make the required impact.
Because Portuguese outlet Desporto ao Minuto have reported that Sporting Lisbon centre-back Tobias Figueiredo is set to leave in the New Year – with Elland Road a possible destination.
The report claims that Leeds have already enquired about the 23-year-old and are prepared to offer around £3.5 million – the figure that Sporting are demanding for the former Portugal under-21 international.
Renowned for his aerial presence, Figueiredo has never managed to nail down a place in Sporting’s first team and has featured more for the reserve side this season than he has in the senior selection.
The defender, who has represented Portugal at every age group from under-15s to under-23s, played 22 games on loan at fellow top flight outfit Nacional last season.
And at just £3.5 million, he could prove to be a real snip for Leeds if he can find the form that made him one of the most highly rated young defenders in Portugal just a few years ago.
Players from ten different countries have arrived at Elland Road since Orta’s appointment at the start of the summer and Figueiredo would be the first Iberian in Thomas Christiansen’s multicultural squad.
