Real Betis are in the market for a winger but Aston Villa have a tough dilemma over Carles Gil’s future.

The prospect of Spanish playmaker Carles Gil returning to Aston Villa next season will still divide the fanbase. Some will argue that his brief flashes of inspiration, epitomised by those unforgettable strikes against Bournemouth and Sunderland, means he is worth a second chance with Steve Bruce’s current side lacking in inspiration all too often this season.
Detractors, however, will point to his series of anonymous attacking displays, his inability to track back and his lightweight stature that made an adaptation to English football almost impossible.
Therefore, reports in El Desmarque that Real Betis’ esteemed talentspotter Miguel Torrecilla watched the winger in action for loan club Deportivo on Sunday will elicit a wide range of responses from Aston Villa supporters.
The 24-year-old played 90 minutes against Valencia at the weekend and, despite his side’s 3-0 defeat, Betis seem unlikely to drop their interest. The Andalusian side want a winger capable of playing on either flank and the ambidextrous Gil fits the bill.
However, whether Villa themselves are willing to sanction the former Valencia youngster’s departure remains to be seen.

The Birmingham Mail reported recently that the club were willing to give the 24-year-old, as well as St Etienne loanee Jordan Veretout, another chance. Though CEO Keith Wyness was quick to ask the question that Villa supporters everywhere are keen to know the answer to; “are they suited to the Championship.”
The pacey, physical nature of the division suggests that Gil, a floating playmaker deemed a luxury player by some, is better off remaining in his homeland.
