It has been a depressing debut season for Andre Silva at AC Milan since his £34 million move from FC Porto last summer. And speculation has intensified that he could be on his way out already.

Sport Mediaset claimed last week that both Monaco and Valencia were keen on offering the 22-year-old an escape route, with reports suggesting that a Milan side facing an uncertain financial future would be willing to cash in for a reasonable fee.

Ambitious Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers had also been linked with an eye-popping swoop for Silva. Calciomercato claimed that Wolves, financed by Chinese investors Fosun International, would make Portugal’s first-choice centre-forward their primary target when promoted to the Premier League.

And O Jogo has reported that Silva’s agent Jorge Mendes, who has many clients already plying their trade at Molineux, reminded the Rossineri in a recent visit to Milan that Wolves would be keen to take him off their hands.

Although O Jogo adds that Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso, who was appointed to replace Vincenzo Montella in the autumn, is determined to give Silva a fresh start and the chance to prove he belongs at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

After Silva finally struck his first Serie A goal at the 17th time of asking – a dramatic stoppage time winner against Genoa on Sunday afternoon – he will be hoping that this will be a turning point in his career at the San Siro.

Gattuso wants Silva to stay but, with Wolves prepared to pay big, the Milan manager’s opinion may not count for much if the Serie A giants receive an offer they simply cannot refuse.
