Newcastle United could reportedly turn to former Benfica and Sporting Lisbon boss Jesus if Benitez walks away.
Jorge Jesus would jump at the chance to take over from Rafael Benitez at Newcastle United this summer, according to the Chronicle.
After three-and-a-half seasons at St James’ Park, Benitez’s contract is due to expire in July and it is far from certain that he will extend his stay after frequently voicing his frustration with life under the oft-criticised owner Mike Ashley.
Record claimed last week that Newcastle are planning to turn to Jesus if the Spaniard does indeed walk away and the 64-year-old hardly played down speculation in an interview with CMTV.
“In England, I have the chance to start work in May. I’m not going to say which team (but) they’re in a difficult position in the Premier League and will possibly go down,” he said, seemingly hinting at a move to Tyneside.
An outspoken and flamboyant character, Jesus is also a fiercely driven manager who won 12 trophies during spells with Portuguese giants Benfica and Sporting Lisbon. He was also named the Primeira Liga’s best coach on three separate occasions.
And, after leaving Saudi outfit Al Hilal in January, the Chronicle claims that Jesus would seize the Newcastle job with both hands if he is offered it as he is desperate to manage in the Premier League.
However, if Ashley thinks Benitez is difficult, just wait until he meets Jesus.
