Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka obviously does not fancy Jamie Ward, sending him to Championship rivals Cardiff City in January.

If Aitor Karanka wants to turn Nottingham Forest into play-off contenders next season, there are still a number of changes that need to be made to a rather bloated squad.

The former Middlesbrough manager brought in some impressive signings during the January transfer window, such as Jack Colback, Ben Watson and Costel Pantilimon, and expect more to arrive in the summer.

Yet this does not bode well for the likes of Jamie Ward, who left on loan for Cardiff City on the final day of the January transfer window.

The hard-working 31-year-old only played 21 minutes of first-team football between Karanka’s arrival at the turn of the year and his exit one month later, and he has not exactly had the impact he would have hoped for at Cardiff either.

Ward did struggle with a groin injury immediately after arriving but, since returning from that setback, has made just two cameo substitute appearances under promotion-chasing manager Neil Warnock.

And according to the Nottingham Post, Ward’s future beyond this summer remains uncertain. It is understood that the Northern Ireland international, who joined from Derby County in 2015, could leave the City Ground on a permanent basis with just one year remaining on his contract.

This would bring an end to a rather underwhelming three-year spell as a Forest player, in which he has scored just three league goals and spent time away from the club at Burton and now Cardiff.
