Sunderland could reportedly raid League One rivals Barnsley to sign Jack Ross’s former St Mirren ace Stephen Mallan.

Jack Ross has already been linked with a number of his former St Mirren stars, namely prolific striker Gavin Reilly and current Celtic ace Lewis Morgan.

But The Star claim that Ross has now turned his attention towards another player he knows very well – midfielder Stephen Mallan.

The Glasgow-born 22-year-old started his career at St Mirren, establishing himself in the senior side and scoring a number of superb goals before leaving for Barnsley in a £300,000 deal in the summer of 2017.

Mallan struggled at Oakwell, however, making just eight Championship appearances and five starts as the Tykes were relegated to League One alongside Sunderland.

Mallan might have struggled for game time at Barnsley but he could be a very useful addition to Sunderland’s squad.

An intelligent midfielder renowned for his pinpoint set pieces and shots from range, Mallan would give Sunderland some much needed goal threat in the centre of the park.

Before that move to Barnsley last summer, Mallan netted 25 goals in his two previous seasons for St Mirren.
