Jack Ross has led St Mirren to the top of the Scottish Championship, and Barnsley would hope he could have a similar impact at Oakwell.
Jack Ross has done an excellent job during 16 months as St Mirren’s manager.
When he took over in October 2016, The Buddies were near the bottom of Scotland’s second tier and in genuine risk of another relegation. Fourteen months on, and St Mirren appear to be cruising back to the top flight, sitting 14 points clear in first place. You can see, then, why Barnsley maybe keen to take a risk on the 41-year-old.
According to the Scottish Sun, Ross was one of the top names on Barnsley’s wishlist after Paul Heckingbottom (below) moved to Yorkshire rivals Leeds United. And it’s understood that St Mirren have reluctantly given The Tykes permission to speak to their highly-rated boss.
And on Wednesday morning, the Daily Record added that Ross would be interested to hear what Barnsley have to say. Barnsley’s Chief Executive Gauthier Ganaye is thought to be keen to have a new manager in place before next Tuesday’s clash with Burton Albion.
But it’s far from certain that Ross will be sitting in the Oakwell dugout in the very near future. The latest promising young manager to come out of Scotland demonstrated his commitment to St Mirren when rejecting Dundee United in the summer – though a chance to manager in England may prove to be too good to turn down.
Barnsley may be struggling near the Championship relegation zone but the club have a crop of talented young players and a reputation for sticking by their managers. They will be hoping that this will be enough to convince Ross to head down south.
