Report suggests the fate of out-of-contract Sunderland defender Marc Wilson

Marc Wilson left Premier League Bournemouth to help Sunderland bounce back immediately from their relegation into the Championship.

On the final day of the transfer window back in August, Sunderland secured three signings they hoped would fire the club back to the Premier League – Jonny Williams, Callum McManaman and Marc Wilson.

But with the season nearing its conclusion, it seems instead that Sunderland will be dropping down to League One rather than returning to the promised land.

Williams has started only seven games in an injury-hit loan spell from Crystal Palace, McManaman has scored just one goal in 22 fixtures and Wilson could even leave the Stadium of Light after less than 12 months as a Sunderland player.

That is according to the Chronicle, which suggests it is unlikely that the former Portsmouth and West Brom defender will be kept on when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Wilson left Bournemouth to move to Wearside on a one-year deal last summer, and the Chronicle claims that he walked away from Premier League offers to sign for a club who were hoping to bounce back immediately after relegation.

But it is fair to say the Republic of Ireland international, who has started most of his 17 Championship games at left-back, might be wishing he had stayed at the top level for the 2017/18 season.

Because a disastrous spell at the Stadium of Light looks set to end in relegation.
