Rangers manager Steven Gerrard could reportedly use his Liverpool and England links to lure Martin Skrtel, Jermain Defoe and Lucas Leiva to Ibrox.
When Steven Gerrard was appointed as Rangers’ new manager in one of the biggest shocks in recent Scottish football history, the optimists suggested that having the former Liverpool skipper in the dugout would make Ibrox a more enticing destination for bigger name players.
And Rangers are certainly thinking big heading into the transfer market.
But that is not all. Gerrard also reportedly wants Bournemouth hit man Jermain Defoe, who he played alongside for England in his pomp.
On paper, these would be three sensational signings, players who could perhaps turn Rangers into title challengers and have their green-clad rivals on the other half of Glasgow looking a little nervy.
But Rangers fans should remember the summer of 2016, when veterans Joey Barton, Niko Kranjcar and Philippe Senderos arrived at Ibrox, before they get carried away. The trio arrived with bags of experience and Premier League quality but all proved to be underwhelming, and expensive, flops.
Although Lucas, Defoe and Skrtel would undoubtedly be a major step up, there is still a degree of risk bringing in three players in their thirties and asking them to adapt to an entirely new league in the autumn of their careers.
