Report: Huddersfield lead Newcastle for Sweden international Kerim Mrabti

Kerim Mrabti’s fine form in the Allsvenskan has attracted the interest of Premier League duo Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town.

Huddersfield Town and Newcastle United need all the help they can get as they both gear up for a daunting battle against relegation in the second half of the season.

And it appears that the survival hopefuls are first set to go head-to-head to sign Swedish international Kerim Mrabti before Wednesday’s transfer window deadline.

The 23-year-old midfielder is in the final year of his contract at Allsvenskan side Djurgardens and, according to the Mirror (live transfer blog, 10.58am), has been lined up for a cutt price move to either St James’ Park or the John Smith’s Stadium.

But it appears that Huddersfield are in pole position to sign Mrabti, who is valued at a bargain fee of around £1.5 million.

Although Newcastle, who have registered their interest, cannot be ruled out just yet while Serie A duo Torino and Udinese have already seen bids rejected.

Mrabti, who won the 2015 Newcomer of the Year award in Sweden’s top flight, has been capped by his country three times and is expected to be included in Janne Andersson’s World Cup squad. And a move to the Premier League would certainly boost his hopes of booking a seat on the plane to Russia.

Mrabti was in superb form for Djurgardens during the 2017 season, helping his side finish third in the table with eight goals and six assists from 25 league appearances.

The forward-thinking midfielder, who can also play in a more advanced role, is renowned for his creativity and eye for goal and would add some much needed cutting edge to Huddersfield or Newcastle’s attack.
