La Liga giants Real Madrid appeared set to sign Rafa Mir from Valencia CF – until Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers rocked up.

If you had any doubts about the pulling power of Wolverhampton Wanderers, consider this: the Championship leaders are set to beat Real Madrid to the signing of Rafa Mir, one of the most exciting young strikers in Spanish football.
That is according to Super Deporte anyway. It is understood that Valencia hotshot Mir, who was also linked with Tottenham Hotspur and Celtic in recent months, is set to put pen to paper on a deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
And, once again, the Chinese funded side have super-agent Jorge Mendes to thank. According to Marca, Mendes has close connections to Mir’s agent, Carlos Bucero while Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo is the man who handed Mir his professional debut in a Champions League clash against Zenit in 2015.

But Wolves have not just nabbed a hugely talented young striker from under Real Madrid’s nose, they appear to have blown them out of the water.
Marca adds that the Champions League holders were only prepared to offer around £450,000 for Mir. Wolves, however, will pay almost £2 million – meaning they have quadrupled the offer put on the table by Florentino Perez’s European powerhouses.

Make no mistake, £2 million could prove to be an excellent investment. Mir has 15 goals in 19 games for Valencia’s B team this season and has starred in the UEFA Youth League.
If he manages to live up to his undoubted potential, Wolves might have signed one of the most promising young goalscorers in all of Europe.
