Claudio Yacob has started just one Championship game since arriving at Nottingham Forest on a free transfer.

Nottingham Forest fans have not seen much of Claudio Yacob so far, but the early signs look good.

For some reason, a West Bromwich Albion side shipping goals on a weekly basis decided to get rid of their long-serving defensive midfielder in the summer, and Forest snapped him up on a free.

So far, however, Yacob has only made two appearances, starting the vital 1-0 win against Sheffield United before coming off the bench in Saturday’s goalless draw against Stoke City.

But the Argentine has impressed with his intelligent positioning off the ball and his passing range on it. And reports from the Nottingham Post are suggesting that the 31-year-old could have a much bigger role in Aitor Karanka’s plans in the months ahead.

Because it is understood that Karanka could look to cut the fat from a bloated midfield in January, with experienced duo Liam Bridcutt and Ben Watson in danger of the chop. Youngster Ryan Yates is also expected to leave on loan.

And reduced competition means Yacob will be in a much stronger position to establish himself at the base of Forest’s midfield.

He has already impressed supporters with his positive start to life at the City Ground and fans can expect to see a lot more of Yacob if Watson and Bridcutt bid farewell.
