Graham Dorrans could be about to join forces with none other than Joey Barton at Fleetwood Town after his Rangers career came to an end on transfer deadline day, according to the Express (3 September, page 59).
Two years after Dorrans’ dream move to Ibrox came true, he has been forced to bid an emotional farewell to his boyhood club.
A series of long-term injuries restricted the former West Brom and Norwich midfielder to just 17 Scottish Premiership appearances and, with time ticking down on deadline day, his contract was cancelled in mutual consent with the Gers taking a big financial hit on a player they signed for £1.3 million (Sky Sports).
Dorrans was expected to join Kilmarnock but, according to The Express, Angelo Alessio’s side will struggle to afford his wages despite selling Greg Taylor to Celtic on Monday.
As a result, the 32-year-old could be forced to return to England with three League One clubs, Portsmouth, Bolton Wanderers and Fleetwood Town, understood to be interested.
Fleetwood, of course, are coached by Joey Barton these days, the one-time Gers skipper who’s ill-fated and controversial spell at Ibrox in 2016 still gives supporters sleepless nights.
Bolton, meanwhile, signed nine, yes nine, new players on deadline day, including former Celtic striker Daryl Murphy, after being saved from liquidation by Football Ventures.
Dorrans would add yet more experience at a club who are still bottom of the League One table with minus-11 points to their name.
