Does report give Wolves renewed hope of signing Stoke’s Jack Butland?

Premier League newcomers Wolves reportedly want to sign Jack Butland from relegated Stoke City in this summers’ transfer window.

Stoke City manager Paul Lambert laughed off suggestions that £35 million could be enough to buy Jack Butland this summer.

According to the Express, ambitious Premier League newcomers Wolverhampton Wanderers were keen to sign the England international goalkeeper this summer and were willing to make him the most expensive shot-stopper in football history.

But Lambert, in quotes reported by Stoke-on-Trent Live, suggested that Wolves would be lucky to buy one glove for £35 million.

Nonetheless, any hope that Stoke might have had of hanging on to Butland this summer seem to have disappeared after their ten-year stay in the Premier League was brought to an end by last week’s home defeat to Crystal Palace.

The Mail state that Stoke expect the former Birmingham City glovesman to leave the Bet 365 Stadium this summer and have prepared for his departure by targeting a loan deal for Manchester City youngster Angus Gunn.

Gunn spent this season on loan at Norwich so is proven at Championship level.

And news that Stoke have a replacement lined up should give Wolves renewed hope, particularly after recent suggestions that Stoke would fight tooth and nail to keep Butland at the club as they aim to bounce back immediately to the top flight.

John Ruddy has been a solid option between the sticks for Wolves this season, winning the Championship Golden Glove award after keeping 24 clean sheets. Butland, however, is a different proposition entirely.
